~Mary Oliver, quoted in Yoga Wisdom at Work
In yoga, we aim to coordinate breath, body and mind in our on-the-mat practice. Many practitioners find it challenging when they first begin. One student even said to me, “I never really paid attention to how I breathe before; this is hard!”
Gaining awareness of the breath is a good first step, and then comes the opportunity to connect body and breath. Athletes coming to yoga may already have some experience with this connection, knowing when to inhale or exhale, or how to control the breath in coordination with the movements of their sport. In yoga, we make this connection and then add awareness of the mind as the next level of practice. Eventually, as we become adept at body/breath/mind coordination on the mat, we begin to see the larger implications of this mindful union of the layers of being and can begin to look for ways to apply this wisdom off the mat as well.
Listen, are you breathing just a little and calling it a life?! Pause and see — begin again!
